Ben Shepherd writes: Music blog aggregator The Hype Machine has unveiled it’s 2008 Zeitgiest. Basically it outlines the top 50 acts, singles and albums.
“Forget the magazine editors & big label marketing budgets. This is the best music from 2008 chosen by the most passionate music fans alive: music bloggers.”
Top bands are defined by how often acts have been mentioned on Hype Machine aggregated blogs. Top Singles is rated on how many times each single has been added as a ‘favourite’ by registered Hypem users, and the methodology behind the top 50 albums hasn’t been explained.
Best thing – you can listen to the singles and albums in full.
2008 was definitely the year the music blog became potentially the most powerful PR medium for bands and musicians. Locally numerous acts have been broken by blogs way before JJJ and street press – acts such as Miami Horror, Gameboy Gamegirl, Cassette Kids, Lost Valentinos, Mercy Arms, Bagraiders etc have recieved significant blog attention locally and overseas … whilst at the same time internationals like Santogold, Flying Lotus and Vampire Weekend have emerged from this space.
